The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is making available $10 million to communities affected by delays constructing the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. Three groups — a State agency called NYSERDA, Hudson River Foundation and City Parks Foundation — will spend these funds after consulting with community groups.

The funds will be spent in the neighborhoods most directly affected by the Plant and can be spent in several different ways. This survey, created by City Parks Foundation, is a chance for you to have input. The deadline is July 14th. Go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/newtowncreeksurvey. Do it now!

North 5th Street Pier is OPEN!

Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park thinks of the North 5th Street Pier to the south like a little sister (or a little brother depending on how you like to genderize your waterfront parks). So we’re thrilled to announce that after what seemed like endless holdups the North 5th Street access to the waterfront pier is finally open. One of our favorite Northside Pier residents Cory K. sents us the above picture this morning and wrote…

“Pier is open! Access on the N. 5th St. side. I believe it is weekend access to start. Hooray!”

When will they start construction on the Community Parks Building at Bushwick Inlet Park?

While it was initially expected that construction on Phase Two of the Bushwick Inlet Park development would begin in the spring, as often happens with construction projects, there has been a holdup gumming the works.

Apparently the issue was getting the NYC Comptroller’s office to OK the contractor on the job. That’s apparently finally happened but it’s caused a 3 month delay.

The new hope is that we’ll be seeing a groundbreaking for the Community and Parks building at North 9th and Kent Avenue with the sloped green roof either in late June or early July of 2010.

After that construction should take approximately 18 months. Look for the new building’s completion around November of 2011.

VISION 2020 Workshop comes to Brooklyn Monday, May 17th

The Bloomberg Administration wants YOUR input about the development of OUR waterfront. This Monday, May 17th, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School, Dekalb Ave. & S. Elliot Pl, Brooklyn.

It’s VITAL that we are represented at this meeting! We need to make sure the city follows up on its agreement to make parks at waterfront sites like Bushwick Inlet.

Bloomberg’s 2010 Budget – $110 Million for Williamsburg/Greenpoint Waterfront

Of course we are saddened by the plan to cut the city workforce by 10,000 jobs. But there is some good news in the budget for our community…

According to the May 11, 2010 NY Observer….

In the capital plan proposed last week, more than $160 million in new funding was earmarked for two planned parks-$110 million for the Williamsburg-Greenpoint waterfront and $55 million for Brooklyn Bridge Park, according to budget documents.

Could this new funding mean the Bloomberg administration has something in the works for the Bushwick Inlet Park? We sure hope so!

Gettin’ Busy at The Bushwick Inlet… cleaning up trash!

The folks at NYC Community Cleanup were at it again this Monday – cleaning up the public sidewalk that fronts Bushwick Inlet. How much do we love these guys? This is the second time they’ve done us this kindness, making it cleaner & safer for all of us to stroll past the Inlet. Thanks NYC Community Cleanup!

A Really Fun Funraiser @ The Diamond

A great time was had by all at the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park/Neighbors Allied for Good Growth Funraiser at The Diamond on Saturday, May 8th. The Hop Sun beer (Pink Lemonade for the kids!) and Bratwurst/Veggie Bratwurst hot off the grill provided the perfect reason for the community to gather in support of greening the strip of public trees that front Bushwick Inlet.

Even our City Councilman Stephen Levin and his Community Liason Rami Metal showed up for the good times. In all about 75 people came out in support of the cause.

Thanks to all who helped out especially Dave Pollack, owner of The Diamond, Union Beer, Cara White of NAG, and Trina McKeever and Katherine Thompson of Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park. Special thanks to the grillmaster Jonathan Fox who kept the Brats rolling off the grill and into the mouths of many a satisfied customer.

Our total take was $830! We’ll be in touch in the coming weeks about the next steps for the greening of the inlet project.

What a beautiful day to kick off our (semi-) regular Park Pics feature. I got to spend a couple of minutes soakin’ up the rays on the AstroTurf today. You should have been there! I had the entire place to myself.

When you do make it out please make sure to snap some pics or shoot some video. It doesn’t matter if you take them on your phone, a point-and-shoot or a fancy camera…just make sure to post them on Flickr and tag them with ‘Bushwick Inlet’ or ‘Bushwick Inlet Park’. They might end up right here.
